Traditional share funds strive to outperform a specific market index (eg; S&P 500, MSCI etc). For example if the market index is up 10% for the period then the traditional share fund will aim to be higher then 10%. If the market index is down 10% they will try to do better than minus 10%. This may mean that they will deliver -8% and be judged as doing a good job, because they have outperformed their benchmark. Unfortunately however the investor has lost 8% and capital value has been lost.

Absolute return investing on the other hand benchmarks itself against its ability to preserve capital and deliver profits regardless the direction of the markets. This means that when the market is -10% the absolute return fund will strive to preserve capital and deliver a positive return.
